Ari and Ask Amy Answer: Burning Sensation From My Sex Toy
PinkLove Asks:
Nowadays my vagina starts burning every time when I use my regular dildo.. why do you think that is?
Dear PinkLove:
Without knowing more details, it’s hard to say exactly what’s going on as there may be a number of factors contributing to your pain. Our first thought is your body may be having a bad reaction to the material of your dildo. The FDA does not currently regulate sex toy materials, allowing for plenty of non-body-friendly products on the market. If your sex toy is made of a rubber jelly and/or has a strong chemically smell, we suggest throwing it away and getting a new one made out of a non-toxic material such as silicone.
It may also be the ingredients in your lube. Try switching to an organic water-based lube, or even a silicone lube (although you will not be able to use this with your toy if it is also made of silicone). If you’re not using lube, it could merely be vaginal dryness. Or you might have a small internal injury that keeps getting irritated. At any rate, if the problem persists, we recommend talking to your doctor about any changes and pain you are experiencing, and getting whatever examinations and tests they deem appropriate.
Best of luck,
Ari and Amy
